Ministry Interview

From recent interview with Paul Barker and Al Jourgensan of Ministry - Jourgensan also recently named Howard Devoto as one of the five or so people he'd most like to work with.

"I'm really intrigued by the very faithful cover of Magazine's "The Light Pours Out of Me," which I know you've done as part of your live show for years now. What first attracted you to that song and how did you decide to finally record it properly?

Al: Ok, I'll take this one. [Paul says OK]. What attracted me to the song is that it's a fucking goddamn excellent song OK? And Howard Devoto's a god damn excellent songwriter, OK? He rules! We did that song live and a lot of people really said [adopting appropriate voice], "You guys sound good on that one." So, I bought a bootleg [laughs] of Ministry at a store one time, because there was me, on the cover, and this bald cinder block-head fucking guy on this bootleg. I bought it, because it said my name and they said that that was Nivek Ogre from Skinny Puppy, right? [Laughs] It's not Ogre. It's not human, basically."

Forms Of Things Unknown

The magazine chatoom has been 'moved' to #dataclaw, though prepare to be assaulted if you say one wrong word about Apollo440 - o_o What can I say, I brainwashed the people that usually linger in there. So it's not as safe ground as #magazine would have been, but still a place to meet *big smile*.

Duncan writes :-

Last night (2001-10-19), there was a signing session for a new and very large book on punk called 'Punk'. I was expecting Pete Shelley to be there, but instead there was Howard Devoto (sitting next to Steve Severin). I got them both to sign my book and asked Howard about the new album (with Pete), he said it should come out in the new year and he's really pleased with how it sounds. The book is really good, despite a lack of buzzcocks / magazine.

SBBS cover

The band Calvary have recorded a version of Shot By Both Sides. Their record company website Coucil Records impishly declares "There isn't much to tell-yet" but the song and other works by artists are well work the listen.

The version is excellent. It is based on 2 guitars and no keyboards - the guitarist (Ryan) has his part note perfect - and the vocal interpretation (Weeks) hits that paranoid/nonchalant compromise at the right level. Personally (and I'm biased) I think the bass (Song) should be turned up more in the mix - it does get to be heard during the guitar solo (?) when it plays the previous lead riff. Oh yes and the drummer's (Rice) is a real skin hitter.

Q online

[Top 12 Winter Albums].

Ian/HD Voxpop

Ian :- "So, the album is completed. That is good news, and am I right to assume that the "under four minute" nature of the songs is a facet you're quite pleased with? Have the songs you performed last September retained their, how shall I put it- volume?"

HD :- "Yes - short & sweet & sour, that's the way we like them these days. The four we did at the ICA are included, only slightly changed, so I suppose the volume is intact. However we are hoping to include a 'power to the people' insert with the finished product, which when correctly configured will enable the listener to reach over and turn the damn thing down."

Momus CD

Cherry Red Records who have recently re-released a superb CD of MOMUS as featured in [Momus Tribute].

It's what Raymond Scott, Bruce Haack or Gary Numan might have sounded like if they'd jammed their way through the back catalogue of Steeleye Span. It's Shakespeare rendered in Flash 5 by a superlucid hyperactive Japanese geek. It's those prolific medieval songwriters Trad. and Anon. finding the missing link between unicorns and Unix. It's preposterous, provocative and prescient. It's another Momus album.

buzzcocks.com

News from London is that Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto have finished their album of all-new material! It should see release later this year (date and title to be determined). This is NOT going to be a Buzzcocks record - it's just the two of them working together for the first time in over 20 years.

The Secret Formula

The enticing interview [Ian Greaves Oct1999] with Dave Formula finally reaches your screens - and its well worth the wait.

Devoto the Actor

Large article by Paul Morley in the The Guardian about a film being made about the Manchester scene - [Guardian 23Feb2001].

Duncan writes

Nick Hornby (author of Fever Pitch which mentioned Buzzcocks) has recently compiled a selection of short stories by various authors - titled 'Speaking with the Angel'. One of the stories is written by Patrick Marber (playwright and co-star of many Steve Coogan comedies) and is called 'Peter Shelley' and involves two teenagers losing their virginity to the Buzzcocks single 'Love you more'.

I know this is more Buzzcocks stuff but, I was watching TV on Saturday night and stumbled across a programme featuring Pete Shelley. It was called 'The Alcohol Years' and was a documentary by Carol Morley (sister of Paul), who had gone back to Manchester and visited all her old friends and loves from the 80's (one of which was Pete), who told her quite frankly what they thought of her. Did anyone else see it?

Dave Formula Update

    Pete Shelley + 1

    buzzcocks.com reports :-

In New York Pete Shelley debuted to an American audience four new tracks he has written with Howard Devoto. Pete and Howard continue to work together on new songs and we just don't know yet what shape their collaboration is going to take - but it's looking good!

2001 is of course Buzzcocks 25th anniversary year - and we can expect some special activity during the year. It's simply too early to speculate on what might take place - but Howard Devoto will probably have at least a small roll to play.

    The Missing Link

With the release of the exqusitie [Time's Up 00] there remains only one song from [Howard Devoto] that is not covered. Dave takes up the story:-

'Peking Hooligan' was never recorded as a demo - the only known recording is on a bootleg tape from a Screen on the Green gig August 1976. It also appeared on a coloured vinyl bootleg EP. Dreadful quality as you can imagine-

    This Mortal Coil

You can officially download HD singing the track Holocaust for $2.99 from CdNow.

This is a v reputable firm and managed to send me a CD from the US in 3 days.

    Ian writes 10/4/2k

"Linder Sterling has an exhibtion on at Manchester Cornerhouse until May 14th. It does feature her sleeve artwork Real Life - Orgasm Addict - etc. It takes place at Manchester Cornerhouse (2 mins from Oxford Station) until May 14th."

    Ian writes 3/4/2k

Ian Greaves mentions "Devoto's immininent autobiograph" no more news than that.

The Beggars' site itself can be found at www.beggars.com. The site has also a kind of wanted-section where people can post a message so that someone might contact them to sell out-of-print cds which have not been re-released. If there were more people requesting Luxuria there too- Please put something about this thing on your site after you've taken a look at the message board and the site. If people start writing on the site, just maybe Luxuria cds will be re-released.

    Stuart Jeffries Imagines

In The Guardian on Feb 4th 2k SJ contemplates that Abba have been offered £1bn (US i.e. a thousand million) to reform. In a box he wanders on to the prices of other bands to reform.

"£1bn for the original Buzzococks. Howard Devoto screaming 'Orgasm Addict!' and Pete Shelley playing the bare minimum of chords as fast as possible."

Great days indeed - oddly the Fall are in at £50k.

    BBC Sfx

'Floorboards' is currently (15/12/99) being used as the backing music for a trailer of 'Gregory Peck' films on UK BBC 2. Presumably this is for its musical impact as the first line is 'I am angry I am ill and I'm as ugly as sin'.
