[Sweetheart Contract]

Sounds 26 July 1980 by Dave McCullough

Plus three others - including a marvellous revamped 'Feed The Enemy' - the regeneration of Magazine hasn't got enough attention - especially as they've at least equalled the achievement of 'Closer' with the essential 'Soap'.

Sadly - 'Sweetheart Contract' isn't a single and Virgin's megapackaging looks somewhat desperate as it seems unlikely that Magazine will set the charts a fire for a long time to come. For their next album-culled 45 expect a track packaged with copies of every Human League album - a free curry (as rec. by Howard of course) - two large bathroom towels ('Sopa' - geddit?) and a blown-up life-size model doll of the now old and grey-haired Mrs. Devoto.

Magazine's renaissance has yet to receive the popular confirmation it richly deserves. A trio of fine singles have passed unnoticed, but I can't say how this one will succeed where a Song From Under The Floorboards' and 'Upside Down failed. 'Sweetheart Contract', from the 'Soap' album. is bitter-smooth romance, swept along by airy synths, and a gulping bass line. The free limited-edition live single also strikes home with a frenzied version of 'Twenty Years Ago' so for once there's a hype that's more than just soap and flannel.
